Canadian photographers spotlighted at World Photographic Cup
Story Highlights:
Capturing a photo tells a story, for Kari Carter they are telling tales of 18 years of service. . .
“. . .You are a part of something when you are in the Forces, that is something you can’t explain to anyone, and when you leave you lose all that, you lose your buddies, your camaraderie, and when you leave you sometimes fall into a hole.”
To help with her mental health she turned to photography, taking courses and even joining the Professional Photographers of Canada. This year she enter a photo call “Fabricated Beauty” into the World Photographic Cup with Team Canada.
“The image is supposed to be about how woman are beautiful and it’s just society what they put on them.”
The photo is one among hundreds from 31 countries and is one of the Top 10 in her category. This year Canada has 7 top 10 photos – a first – 3 are from right here in Alberta.
(WPC Team Canada Co-Captain Jillian Chateauneuf) “It’s just a special feeling to have so many of our photographers actually make the finals just increases the excitement and the joy we have as a team and a nation,”
Kristian Bogner and Jacquie Matechuk, both are award winning photographers and each have won a bronze in the same competition but say this competition is tough: “When you are judged by peers of pro photographers from around the world it’s a completely different stage because we all see the world through a different lens.” (Bogner)
Bogner’s submission is of a surfer catching a wave in Hawaii. “The epitome for me in photography is capturing the peak energy of a moment, and I feel like I’ve done that in this image.”
Matechuk called her submission of a great grey owl ‘Perfect Timing.’ “I had no idea which way this owl was going to move or turn and the fact that it happened to look at me and in that fraction of a second the eyeball was between the wing split. I mean there is no way I could duplicate that again.”
Both say they are exciting about the trip to Dallas Texas, where the winners will be announced on April 27th.
