2024 – Wedding Open
My wonderful clients were married on top of a mountain. I took many shots outside overlooking the spectacular mountain vista; however, I love the challenge of capturing a creative portrait when I don’t have much to work with. In this case, I saw a row of water glasses in the venue to shoot through, which I knew would work well to fill the frame. I positioned a flash to the left of the glasses (to create the bright bokeh balls) and another flash behind the couple (to create the brim light on the bride’s face and the groom’s back). The light hitting the glasses and the timed moment of my clients about to kiss made for a beautiful, creative portrait.

When I arrived at my client’s home on the morning of her wedding day, her wedding dress, along with all of her bride’s maids dresses, were hanging in front of a large window. Her niece was asking my client questions about her wedding dress (suspended in the center of the window) and why it was so significant for her wedding day. It was an extraordinary moment. I immediately grabbed my camera and under-exposed the scene to keep all the highlights intact. I took several shots to capture the moment where both my client and her niece were holding the wedding dress together.
2023 – Wedding
We travelled to the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton on my client’s wedding day. As we walked up the stairs, I noticed the glass railing reflected the stairs and created unique lines and angles. My clients were waiting further down the staircase, enjoying a tender moment together. I quickly asked my assistant to use a modified off-camera flash to light them. I carefully positioned my clients in a dark area of the railing reflection while balancing the exposure of the off-camera flash with the natural sunlight hitting the stairs in the reflection.
