The OCULUS – New York City, NY is the centrepiece of The World Trade Center Transportation Hub. Designed by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, it is symbolic of a bird being released from a child’s hand and represents the city’s rebirth after the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001. The structure’s orientation serves as a lasting reminder as it’s primary axis is in alignment with the sun’s solar angles on each September 11th, from 8:46 am, when the first plane struck, until 10:28 am, when the second tower collapsed. My vision was to capture the totality of this architectural masterwork and present its uniqueness and magnificence framed in its immediate environment, whilst illuminating it’s story and purpose.

The struggle of survival in the wild most often goes unnoticed. I came across this primal scene on a windswept beach in Tofino, British Columbia, Canada. Soft beams of diffused light periodically broke through the heavy grey cloud and misty rain. The sound of thunderous waves and ocean scent filled the air. I felt chills and a sense of awe as I observed this massive bird of prey tug and strain to rip the flesh from the beached animal. I call this image ‘Primal Hunter’ in honour of this magnificent creature and the wonder of Mother Nature.

TITANIC Museum – A Temple of Remembrance, is an image of the internationally acclaimed TITANIC Museum, which was built to commemorate this maritime tragedy. It sits adjacent to the dry dock in which the RMS Titanic and her sister ship the RMS Olympic were built, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The building is an enormous and magnificent structure. My hope was to present its power and elegance in a visually unique way whilst also alluding to and paying homage to its purpose.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest in the United Arab Emirates and one of the most magnificent mosques in the world. I was in awe of its scale and grandeur. While shooting the exterior I found it overwhelming in its enormity. I was looking for something more intimate that would contain, yet communicate, the essence and scale of this place of worship. As I encountered the arches framing the view of the minaret towers and domes, I knew I had my shot. The challenge was capturing the full 30-foot height of the arch in this confined interior space; no tripods permitted.
