World Photographic Cup / Awards
A unique Olympic-style competition, the World Photographic Cup is not only about shutter speeds and composition, it’s about the spirit of friendship with 31 countries participating this year. The photographers, diverse in style and background, find a common ground in their shared love for the art of capturing moments.
For Team Canada, it’s the volunteer curators, the collaborative brainstorming, and the collective heartbeat of a team bound by a shared vision—to bring Canadian photographic excellence to the forefront. Our 30 image submission included 3 remarkable photographs in each of the 10 categories. Each photograph, a testament to the artistic brilliance flourishing in Canada.
Today we celebrate the final standings of Canada’s Top 10 images, including Jacquie’s GOLD, helped secure Canada’s 3rd place finish in the WPC competition.
“Time behind the lens is precious for photographers. It’s our chance to escape the world, the pressure, the demands. To rediscover our creative selves and explore, fearless, all this world has to offer. But tonight was about more than what it means to us as individuals, it was about one team. A family of incredibly talented artists celebrating the beauty and power of photographic art. Tonight Team Canada stood loud and proud. We cheered, cried and celebrated every moment together. Each of us so grateful for this amazing opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage.”
2024 Gold Medal / Jacquie Matechuk
Jacquie Matechuk, a Canon Ambassador, has always embraced the challenge of capturing the unpredictable, guided by a longing to share the beauty of this world. From her love of adrenaline pumping sports action to her passion for wildlife and the environments they call home.
Her magnificent owl in flight image is called “I’ll See You Through the Darkness”. They are called ‘Ghosts of the Forest’, maneuvering with deafening silence. They twist and contort through fields of towering pines, breaking free at last to hunt. They remain elusive, artfully hiding in plain sight. This large frame veiled in perfect camouflage, erupts to life with a target detected. But this brief moment – this is ours and ours alone. I’ll see you through the darkness and always remember.
