World Photographic Cup / Awards
The World Photographic Cup is a competition in which a team of photographers represent their home country. This one of a kind international team competition features the best photographic art from around the world.
Nations across the globe, including Canada, meticulously curate their countries images to create a collection of 24 amazing images to enter in the World Photographic Cup. Of those a select few may make it to Top 10 in the World and have an opportunity to earn awards at the WPC ceremony. One of those was Ron Gesser’s image which finished 6th in the world in the Natural Portrait category.
Team Canada is excited to celebrate Ron’s success along with our other Canadian finalist, Holly-Lynn Latimour, and we thank them for showcasing Canada on the world photographic stage.
“It has been a real honor to participate and represent WPC Team Canada 2023 in this year’s World Photographic Cup. The recognition I have received from the media regarding my achievement is way beyond anything I could have imagined, and I want to thank the team co-captains, curators and my fellow teammates for their encouragement and support.”

Visiting a small Kutia Kondh village in central Odisha, India, I came across an elderly woman sitting on a bench. It was obvious from the deep emotion in her eyes and lines on her face that she had lived a long and challenging life. This photo achieved my objective of capturing a subject’s raw expression and look in their eyes in a natural and genuine way.
The Kutia Kondh are one of 75 Particularly Vulnerable Trible Groups as listed in the Indian constitution, which are indigenous people whose way of life is at risk. The Kutia are animists, and woman traditionally have a common geometric facial tattoo that serves as an identification mark for both the living and spirit worlds.
